INSPIRING INTERIOR – EYE CANDY!

leave a comment »

In 1986, I operated my own interior design company, Maxine Capilli & Associates, under my nom de plume.

“Capilli” was one of several family surnames I possess coming from a bloodline that had both Italian and Spanish ancestors. And of course, the combination of surnames can be rather long by Asian standards. “Maxine” is a given name and a tribute to my late father’s eldest brother, Maximino – we owe him an eternal debt of gratitude for the patience and perseverance he showed towards our family even with distance separating us – he would never leave the land of his birth but would keep regularly in touch with my father in Hong Kong, until Uncle Mino died in his late 40′s.

What surrounds us, the ambience of a room, an office, a hotel, spa or any interior we step into affects us deeply and subconsciously.

Like music, the influence of an environment tends to affect our mood and so it is without surprise that the more appealing to our eyes and conducive to our spirit, the more relax and balance we tend to be – considering our current stressful lives. That’s the “zen” and haven or sanctuary we seek these days … a glorious, comfortable domestic cavern where we can escape to and replenish our mental, emotional and physical well-being and regain healthy equilibrium.

What happens if you cannot find yourself in such an environment given economic constraints? Take time to let your mind enter scenes, like an escape to a cinema, and envision a bit of a dream home, your ideal and peaceful sanctuary.

The photographs on the following pages show what I enjoy and find cheerful. I still dabble in interior designing when I can and monitoring the bi-annual Maison & Objet exhibitions in Paris always gives me insight into the trends of designs for the home. Four days of the exhibition are never enough, not for something as massive as M&O … and not when you want to literally live in the model homes these designers come up with to showcase their talents and their use of furniture and fabric.

BLEU NATURE

leave a comment »

Founded in 1995 by Frank LEFEBVRE, Bleu Nature is a craft-based business located near Lille, in Northern France. Our principal material is driftwood, but we also use hemp, pebbles, stones and flat rocks, raw linen, boiled wool, leather, skins, teak, slate and petrified wood.

Every year, a team from Bleu Nature combs the beaches for pieces of driftwood. Large or small, straight or twisted—each piece deserves special attention. Once brought back safely to our home base, the driftwood is sorted and stored. They need no further processing because the water has frozen them in time forever.

In our studio, we build, nail, adjust, fasten and balance our pieces.

All Bleu Nature creations are born of an encounter between the technical mastery of a French craftsman and the prolonged work of nature. Nature has fashioned each piece of driftwood over time, rendering every item we produce unique in both form and dimension.

The Bleu Nature collection is the fruit of collective labour.

Every season, all members of the team contribute to the design and production of new products.

K&F international was founded in 1992 by Kris Van Puyvelde and Frank Boschman, two engineers who shared the same spirit and energy to build the Royal Botania collection. From the very start the focus was on high quality, original designs, comfort and perfect service. Originally, Royal Botania stood for high level teak garden furniture, but soon a full serie of exquisite outdoor lighting was added, made of different natural materials such as brass, stainless steel , solid granite and of course A-grade teak wood.
