AAA TALK : Erin GLEESON, 18 February, 2009, 6:30-8:00pm (Hong Kong), Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre

cambodia

Asia Art Archive presents a talk by Erin Gleeson, Phnom Penh based curator on contemporary Cambodian art.

Through historical frameworks and personal anecdotes, Phnom Penh based curator Erin Gleeson will explore the lack of place, until now, for contemporary art practices in and from Cambodia. Slides of artworks by Cambodia’s eldest to youngest artists reveal new and culturally specific perspectives from a country too often defined by ancient temples and collective trauma.

Erin Gleeson is a curator, writer, and arts consultant based in Phnom Penh. Her work focuses on developing contemporary art practices among emerging artists and increasing visual literacy in Cambodia. In 2008, she established BASSAC, a resource center for artists that provides studio space, materials and opportunities for continuing education. She is the Cambodian Desk Correspondent for the magazine ArtAsiaPacific.

The exhibition ‘Forever Until Now: Contemporary Art from Cambodia’ curated by Erin Gleeson takes place at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery (Central, Hong Kong) and 10 Chancery Lane Gallery Art Project (Chai Wan, Hong Kong) from 13 February – 14 March 2009. For more information about the exhibition, contact info@10chancerylane.com or 28100065.

ARTIST TALK : Emmanuel SANTOS, 12 February, 2009, Thursday, 5pm (Manila)

Emmanuel Santos

Emmanuel Santos will be giving an artist talk on February 12, Thursday, from 5-6pm on how music played an important role in the creation of the exhibition. “Photography is my song, a monochromatic ballad of expressions between birth and death,” says Santos. “A melodic song that appears like scenes devoid of dress rehearsal and images that were formed in the shadows of the earth’s surface… silent and mute, craving to be told. The chorus often lasts with unending refrain of joy and sorrow, a continuous pattern in human cycle.”

Silverlens Gallery is at 2/F YMC Bldg. II, 2320 Pasong Tamo Ext., Makati, 816-0044, 0905-2650873, manage@silverlensphoto.com. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday 10am–7pm and Saturdays 1–6pm. www.silverlensphoto.com.
